untrue and harmful.. . . ?

In the book “Why I Am Not A Christian, and other essays on religion and related subjects” by Bertrand Russell, he says in the preface page v. “I think that all the great religions of the world – Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Islam, and Communism – both untrue and harmful.”

What does he mean by, “Communism that great ‘religion’”? Well I will agree that Communism is untrue and harmful as Mr. Russell says of this list of “religions” but Communism is not a religion in any traditional sense of the word.

Is “religion” harmful and/or untrue? Yes and no.

Buddhism says everything is “nothing”. . . Whereas Hinduism says “everything” is one (and is there). Can they both be true?

Christianity, Judaism, and Islam say that “God” created out of nothing. But they each lay out different paths to that God, different identities as to who that God is, and what human’s relationship is to that God differ as well…… i.e. with a difference. Different to the point that they are not the same. Could they all be true?

We may disagree or agree about these things this side of “death” but once a person dies “Something” will happen. For instance: 3 people are standing along side the road talking, one believes there is no God and that we just return to the dust, the next person believes in reincarnation, and the third person believes in a heaven (as in Christianity). In our little story a truck comes along and runs over all three of these people. Something is going to happen once they die. They will either all simply return to dust, or they will be reincarnated, or they will stand before God, or something none of them planned on, but some one thing will happen. At that point it’s not a case of they each get to do what they believed they’d do after they die. One thing will happen to all three of them.
